What is Sponsored Residential?

Sponsored Residential is a person-centered service model designed to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the comfort of a private home. Rather than living in a facility-based setting, individuals are carefully matched with a trained sponsor provider who offers daily support, supervision, and a stable, family-style environment. This model is guided by the standards of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) and funded through Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers, ensuring both quality and accountability at every level of care.

Lifestyle compatibility is key, and we ensure that every individual has the choice and the right to enjoy what life has to offer.

Highly Trained, Supported Providers

To maintain the highest standards of care, sponsor providers complete comprehensive training aligned with DBHDS and HCBS requirements.

This includes CPR and BLS for emergency preparedness, medication management, and specialized training such as TOVA to better support behavioral and cognitive needs.

I have had a great experience as a Sponsored Provider with Serenity C & C Inc. I have been with them for over 13 years, and I got involved because of my grandson, who has multiple disabilities. To be able to be well trained and supported by Serenity C & C Inc. has truly enriched my family’s quality of life.

Sponsored Residential Program

At its core, Sponsored Residential is about creating a life that feels natural, connected, and meaningful. It offers a more personal alternative to traditional group homes, where multiple residents often live together with rotating staff and structured routines.

In contrast, Sponsored Residential placements are intentionally smaller and more individualized. Individuals live in a provider’s home, forming consistent relationships and experiencing a level of stability that mirrors family life. This approach allows for deeper connections, greater flexibility, and support that truly adapts to the individual—not the other way around.

Choice and Compatibility

Choice is a defining element of this model. Individuals, along with their families or guardians, play an active role in selecting their sponsor provider. This ensures compatibility not only in care needs, but also in personality, lifestyle, and values.

Support is then tailored around the individual’s unique goals and preferences, informed by tools such as the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS), which helps identify the level and type of support needed across all areas of daily living. The result is care that is both clinically appropriate and personally meaningful.

Highly Trained, Supported Providers

To maintain the highest standards of care, sponsor providers complete comprehensive training aligned with DBHDS and HCBS requirements. This includes certifications in CPR and BLS for emergency preparedness, medication management to ensure safe administration and oversight, and specialized training such as TOVA to better support behavioral and cognitive needs.

In addition, providers participate in ongoing internal training focused on person-centered practices, regulatory compliance, and continuous skill development. This ensures that every individual receives support from someone who is not only compassionate, but highly qualified.
